The Setting

Las Terrenas, on the Samaná peninsula.

A small Caribbean town that became, over the last twenty years, a quiet anchor for an international community of artists, restaurateurs, and travelers who like their beaches uncrowded.

02

A peninsula apart.

Samaná juts north from the Dominican mainland into the Caribbean — a separate ecosystem of coves, mountains, and palm forests, less developed than the country's eastern resorts. Las Terrenas sits on the northern coast of the peninsula. French and Italian residents settled here in the 1980s and never left; today the town is unusually multilingual, with bakeries, trattorias, and Dominican fish shacks side by side. The residence is 1 km up the hill from Playa Bonita — the beach National Geographic ranked among the world's top 20.

The beaches.

  • Playa Bonita

1 km · Top-20 worldwide (National Geographic). Wide, fine-sand crescent backed by coconut palms. Quietest in the morning.

  • Playa Cosón

15 min · five kilometers of open sand, end-of-the-road feel. A handful of beach restaurants, otherwise yours.

  • Playa Las Ballenas

10 min · the town beach, walkable to restaurants. Best for sunset swims.

  • Playa Las Terrenas

12 min · in the town center, lively. Pop in for a drink and a swim, then move on.

04

Eating well.

Las Terrenas eats above its weight. The Pueblo de los Pescadores — the old fishermen's village turned waterfront dining strip — has Italian, French, Argentine, and Dominican kitchens, all within walking distance of each other. Reservations help on weekends; we can arrange. Markets in town for produce; fish straight off the boat at the harbor most mornings.

Seasons.

High season runs December through April — drier, cooler nights, busier town. May through November is quieter and greener. Whales arrive in Samaná Bay between mid-January and mid-March; whale-watching trips are an easy day excursion.
